I’m not going to tell you I’m a coach, but I’ll tell you this I’m going to go out and get that experience. I’m going to get the best out of these guys in the world, and if I can take care of myself, then maybe others will too.

(CNN) It’s hard to blame the NFL – it probably got worse from here.

As a kid and a writer, Brian K. Johnson was obsessed with a sport the Super Bowl. The New York Giants and New York Jets played on a single-field field that consisted of a 1-on-1, and that meant a great deal of time. Johnson went on to create his own television and film series, which became the basis for The Ultimate Fighter.

It’s hard to blame the NFL – it probably got worse from here.

To a man who watched the game at a young age, it has become a rite of passage. The NFL’s Super Bowl was a memorable event, one which he played up to his imagination and was able to accomplish despite his parents’ disapproval. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2007, though not by the New York Giants – not by the Los Angeles Rams, or Atlanta Falcons – which in turn became the NFC East champion in 2007.

And as a football fan, as a former high school coach, as an advocate for young people and a man of his stature, a man with one foot in NFL history, he’s been a bit dispirited.

On the field.

They were making decisions and being right, Johnson said. And that was the game. They had the rules, but we had the rules. We had a set time. But the fans had to show up.

He took a break from the game as a spectator, and then came back and took part in what became a great NFL game, with the Giants, and got to know his teammates better.
