On Thursday, July 16, the Federal Communications Commission will vote on its own rules that will enable internet service providers to charge for certain video content, such as torrents that could be viewed and streamed without paying the internet service provider. According to sources from ATT, Comcast, Verizon, and Time Warner Cable, the FCC is going to decide who should pay for this type of video.
The FCC, at last year’s second public discussion, set a deadline for it to vote on these rules. In order to participate, all internet service providers must register with the Federal Trade Commission, and the proposed rules will also require that all internet service providers charge for their content from customers that are not internet service providers.
While the FCC’s current rules are vague, the proposed rules change that. They could force Internet service providers to charge less to deliver their services to users because they are only using video content that the government is charging for. In addition to this, the rules would ban Internet service providers from doing anything like placing ads on their websitesthe most basic of services. The rules are not just going to make it harder for Internet service providers to make money, but even for them to do so.
As of July 2, Comcast’s video streaming service plans to require anyone using its video streaming service to pay 9 a month for the same service. Comcast’s video streaming service, however, will require its customers to pay a monthly service fee
