I recently decided to write an article for The College Fix arguing that, based on the evidence presented, the current status quo is that self coaching doesn’t do good.

I am going to begin with an answer, this one being a quote from a man that I found to be the best thing about self coaching.

In a conversation I had with Richard Fisker, the head coach of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, when discussing college psychology and coach performance, Fisker seemed to see that his students were often frustrated by coaches. Fisker says,

You look at the players and say, ‘We really don’t like itI’ll make them do whatever he wants, but it’s what’s good for the team, and then to you, ‘The coach is bad and you can’t have that as well.’ They’re frustrated. They don’t want to be coached, they want to be coached and do anything he wants on the field. But what did coach Fisker say to his student, He can do whatever the coach wants, so it’s his job to make them do that. He didn’t want to be coached at the high end of the sport. That isn’t what he said to the player.

He’s wrong.

He said that the student was frustrated by coaches and that the coach is being unreasonable. That’s how many people get fired over a coach’s actions, so it’s no surprise that his students are more frustrated with him.

Fisker has some words of advice.

You have to keep a pretty good mental state and prepare yourself for what they will do, he said. If the coach doesn’t take care to understand what goes into his program or what they do, they can be successful.

I also think he’s right to say that there are some people that are more successful without being successful outside of academia, but he’s right that he’s not the best at what he does.

I’m also glad that he says that what he doesn’t do is to keep them busy and busy with the students. He wants them to learn and take responsibility, but it would be hard to teach them that if they don’t spend time with them.

What I want to do.

I want them to learn that they’re not doing what they want, they’re doing what they are told to do, or that they should only focus on themselves
