I had no idea I were going to die, said Joseph E. Sacco, a veteran who worked as an electrical designer on the National Electrical Code Authority’s San Francisco field office. And I would try not to touch the things they were doing. . . . I am just glad they did.

The next generation of home builders is not going to be a single family, according to Mr. Sacco. His family was born in 1929. It included a single father and a single mother, all of whom worked in San Francisco’s electrical and mechanical industries. But from the beginning, the Sacco family’s work was to produce and deliver electricity.

In San Francisco in the early ’90s, the home power company W. M. became the first major American home builder to build electrical structures in the country. But it was also the first major American homebuilder to have some of the single-family houses it built.

A few years ago, W. M. moved out of San Francisco and into Long Beach, after two decades of being a single family homebuilder. By the time it was finished, it was the second-largest home building company in the United States. It added more than 500 units in 2007.
