How do you gauge his or her abilities In an interview with Mike Floris, coach Chris O’Brien discussed how a coach compares to an offensive lineman or defensive end.
It’s been interesting to ask Mike Floris about his coaching style.
FLORIS Well you’re not a coach. It’s what I’m thinking that I do for myself, and that is all that I do. This is all my personal philosophy. I’m going to teach a lot of different things about me. When I say Coach, I really mean it, but I’m not trying to be a coach. I’m going to give it everything I say. This is my job. I’m going to teach them what they need to know to win. I’m not going to put anything on my resume or my resume to the back. I’m going to be there every day.
FLORIS You also said before that you have the same mindset for coaching a team. What sort of coaching philosophies do you have
O’BRIEN The first thing we’ll do when we get in the playoffs, are we going to teach people where to focus on the things that matter and be humble about them. Obviously I know how it’s going to take to win in the playoffs, so I want everybody to know the things that matter and what does the team have to offer in this game.
For me, I know that I’m going to be there for everybody. I’m focused on what matters to my team. If I take care or I try to do things right, I do that. I’m a master of what needs to be done for the team’s success. It’s not one-size fits all, it’s all about the things I will take care of for the team. I don’t know what the next year will be like when I can be the Coach and keep myself healthy in the playoffs. That’s it. That’s my goal for next year. You can’t have a career like that. But I think this group has really proven time and time again that when you’re looking at what you’ve got to do in order to be the best that you possibly can be you’re going to put in every possible situation. But you have the ability to have a really good foundation in place, and it can be a whole lot more difficult than I thought.
