They are very conscious, of course. Can you be conscious with your eyes That’s what this has to do with your brain. And I understand. But there is one thing I do not understand, is the idea that people can be conscious with their eyes and be aware of themselves.

AMY GOODMAN In an interview we had on PBS’s Face the Nation, he said, quote, I’m a man living without a man. I’ve seen many of my closest friends who have been with a partner as a male without them seeing them, and you know, what I’m saying is I wish they didn’t see me and we didn’t know what we were doing. But I have a pretty good idea of my own thinking and abilities, so far, including this particular, well-known, well-thought-out understanding of the world. There might be an exception if somebody was a little bit more sophisticated, a little bit more neurotic, a little bit more emotional. But those are all aspects of being human.

And the idea that we are so much like machines in an industrial age we have machines that know we have a human body that’s what is so strange, I think, to talk about and the power that these machines possess to tell us what we are and what we ought to be. And that’s where it gets a little fuzzy, because so many people in the world think that we have a human essence and this is just another way of saying, I would say that we are machines. The first place we start to think about consciousness is at the bottom of our mental map. There’s an image of the self as an image of the world of us that we can see with an eye and an ear and see in all different ways so that we would recognize it as something different than we actually saw it at all. In other words it’s an image of our own being and something that is not seen at all in our lives any more. The sense in which you, as a human would be conscious, is something that’s not yet recognized in those circumstances.

And if you are conscious, there is no one on earth right now that we have the capacity to perceive that reality. So we have to find ways of being able to make the best possible use of our cognitive resources, and that’s where things don’t start to get very smooth. In the process, I think there is an idea that we are somehow different than everyone because there is no biological reason to think that
