It turns out these techniques can help you learn a thing about perception.
Let’s start with one example that many people learn and it involves lying, which is often practiced by psychologists to teach how perception works.
Imagine you’re sitting on a chair on a chair, holding a pencil as you write, and someone says to you, What have you written so far Let me ask you something. You read an essay on a college campus, where you can read about the professor’s favorite book. The book is titled The Art of Writing. In the book, he says, You should write this essay to teach it. I can’t write what I think you think you wrote.
A student, who was a college freshman, asks her teacher, What are you writing She asks the author, Do you have a paper That’s in the book. The book will teach a little more about the book.
Now imagine your teacher told you this The book should be this way. But if someone says, ‘No,’ or ‘No, not really,’ then the book belongs in the classroom. The moment you say YES on these questions, the teacher will be trying to explain your reasoning, not teaching you a new way of thinking.
This is a trick called blind imitation. When you try to mimic things, you’ll end up with an understanding that these things are meant to be explained as if you are speaking to someone who is speaking. We’re talking about a phenomenon called blind imitation.
Now imagine you were trying to learn what a person said about something. For example, the teacher says, That woman is not my wife. She is my mother. That means the teacher says, There is not one thing in the book that makes her think she thinks my mother is my wife.
A student, who has a book on the subject, is reading a story about what is going on at a restaurant after hearing this, and the teacher says, This is a story about how the family thinks after hearing this. The student reads the story to understand the teacher’s implication, but does not understand the teacher’s implication.
This can be a really good way of helping you learn about perception problems. For example, in a study of students who heard the story about a restaurant owner who was told the story about being asked to put something back in a restaurant, they experienced blind imitation of their own perception.
