Lee and a friend were working at a McDonald’s in L.A.’s Chinatown when the gunman started the shooting, saying a friend was walking by and shooting the victim.

When he got to the window of the building, it was already dark.

The friend he was talking to said he was on the sidewalk, standing a few steps away. He heard about the shooting. His words were muffled This guy is out there, he’s shooting people down here, Lee said.

Lee said he thought it was a sign of something sinister was going on, such as an intruder.

My heart jumped, he said. I mean I was shocked right then, and I don’t know a lot of people don’t. But we both have stories of people that came to this intervention, he added sarcastically. And the fact that this man was acting like this just makes me a little sad.

The shooter then pulled out a revolver and shot Lee in the chest several times in the parking lot, just after the friend who was standing above him realized he’d been shooting someone.

He got to the curb and fired at somebody, Lee said. Just as they were running toward him, he made his way down the street to a safe location, got out of his truck, ran. And he had to run. He fired, and I don’t understand why I can’t see where he was going.

Lee said he was surprised it turned out so well.

I’m not surprised, it’s surprising, so it’s unusual, he added. He looks normal, looks normal. But I was very surprised by what happened. I went out there, was very surprised, was surprised every other one in the park, and I’m sure that if they’ve caught two kids who had their car out of the way and were hiding in some places the whole time, I’m sure they’re talking about this. There’s no chance they’re doing anything like this ever. They’re not going to say anything.

This has never happened before, Lee said never happened before. He doesn’t believe the shooter had some kind of plan, he said.
