The Department of Homeland Security’s Inspector General has issued a public report into the state of Virginia’s security systems, saying that it may be difficult or impossible to identify and report suspected threats to Virginia’s public schools.
The report, prepared by FBI agents, said that since the September 11 attacks, more than 150 major vulnerabilities to DHS’s security system have been identified, including

If a school is in close proximity to a terrorist target, security officers have to be able to locate the person who is supposed to be there as well as identify the person who is supposed to be in the school. Other types of threats were detected and identified by DHS officials who, upon reviewing the report, determined that the potential for violent extremist actions were significantly less common in the public schools, which are not part of the US’s sensitive intelligence community.

When a school is in a high risk, the local authorities must monitor the potential impact of such threats on schools that are located on other routes, like in urban areas when the number of students is low. DHS also recommends that schools, even if they’re off-leash locations, be aware of the potential for violence within a particular school district.
