The U.S. Department of Education has asked the FBI and other federal agencies to provide documents related to the investigation of potential voter fraud in Texas and the election in Virginia over the first quarter of the past year.

The National Election Security Center said it is providing the FBI and DHS with more than 120,000 potential documents related to any and all possible issues. The Center’s request is part of a larger federal investigation into possible voter fraud in the United States.

What we have identified this year are the most numerous potential factors, said Mark L. Capps, an assistant secretary of education and director of the Center for Elections and Democracy.

We identified some major differences between 2012 and 2016 and the same issues occurred at other election time periods. We also saw some significant patterns of voter fraud that we know are related to illegal immigration or recent voter registration changes.

The centers say some of the factors included an election where more than 60 percent of states and jurisdictions had fewer than 500 eligible voters, and an election that had no such limits and no requirement to have proof of identification in order to register.

Lately, though, the Center pointed to other federal authorities as having identified voter fraud as widespread.

The center said it had received at least 10,000 possible document requests in the second quarter of the last year and will receive more, including a full-page picture of documents that were available within just over a week of the election.

The State of Texas received more than 733,000 documents in the second quarter, the Center said. It received more than 5,000 in the first quarter, according to the Center.
