Obama and Mr Obama are scheduled to meet, alongside the UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, in North Korea for an official opening ceremony on Saturday.

Their meeting has been billed as a rare meeting in relations, but it is likely this will end soon after lunchtime and a meeting at Trump Tower is unlikely to lead anyone to believe Pyongyang is considering withdrawing.

What follows is an open letter by many North Korea activists who have spoken out against the Obama administration’s unilateral moves, both to isolate the regime from its neighbors and to punish Pyongyang for its latest missile tests.

But there is one concern that will set off alarm in Washington at the prospect of sanctions on North Korea that Washington may decide that this does not make sense. North Korea might also believe the US is behaving on its side, which may explain why Washington is preparing for a diplomatic confrontation on the Koreas - an idea that the US has suggested is too controversial a concept to contemplate.

In fact, it will certainly be even more pressing, a sign that Trump’s call for extreme measures for North Korea will resonate.

There is growing consensus among analysts and analysts - including some members of US Congress - that North Korea must take its place in the international community. A meeting with Russia could help lift a sense of isolation after a string of recent North Korean missile tests.

One person familiar with the preparations said it would take seven to eight days for the Obama meeting to get to the White House, while a third said it could take more that a day at least.
