The American Indian tribe of Humboldt was attacked for almost five years by two Native American tribes. They forced the tribe’s leaders to surrender because they thought their land was sacred.
During the four-year war, several Indians attacked Native Americans, killing and enslaving all but one of the four tribe. One tribe leader was executed, while the other two were executed for murder. Only this time, the tribe was attacked again.
During that three-year war, the U.S. government took the responsibility for the genocide of the American Indian people. On September 24, 1942, three of those four tribes were given up. They were placed on the death row until a U.S. military tribunal decided they were innocent.
The U.S. government also imposed a death penalty for the tribes from 1944 through 1953. The final verdict was later reduced to a two-year suspension. The U.S. has also charged Humboldt with war crimes committed in 1941, 1944 and 1955 and for the extermination of the American Indians of the Northwest. But since the Humboldt’s people had been exterminated, it’s not clear how much the U.S. government actually paid them.
The tribes had been ordered by the U.S. to destroy any remnants of a culture, culture, and culture based upon that culture. Their leader, a young Indian named John L. Smith (or at least an individual that was born by a Humboldt), was not given a second chance and was never seen again.
It was a very difficult situation for many of the Humboldt’s tribal leaders. They were the only ones to be accepted as human beings in the United States.
Smith spent most of his time writing in the Humboldt language, and was known to be adept at writing poetry. The only language his writings could produce were Japanese. He was an avid reader of literature, and when asked whether he had ever read a book he never thought should have been written.
