The number of Americans who seek treatment for mental illness has dropped to a record low, but still a significant percentage of the population, according to a new report.

About 19 million Americans who seek treatment have tried to get mental health treatment for mental illnesses, which is equivalent to 4.2 million people nationwide. That rate fell from 16.7 percent in 2012 to 7.6 percent this year, according to research from Dr. Andrew Zimbardo of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), who coauthored the report.

The average age for obtaining treatment for mental illness in the U.S. is 28, while the decline in the number of Americans who seek treatment is the smallest since 2001, according to a new report released today by the Pew Research Center and the American Health Care Act Center.

The percentage of Americans who seek mental health treatment has dropped to almost none, Dr. Zimbardo said. As they experience more and more health needs, their health care utilization will increase and there won’t be more people needing medication while they’re waiting for treatment.

According to the report, the number of U.S. young people who seek treatment with antipsychotic drugs rose from 4.3 million in 2004 to 13.5 million in 2009, an increase of 10 million units, the year before the government passed a Mental Illness Prevention and Improvement Act.

Dr. Alissa Gorman, president and CEO of the National Alliance for Mental Hypertension, an advocacy group led by the American Association of Retired Persons, which has been involved with the fight for health care reform over the last 50 years, said the percentage of young Americans who seek treatment has dropped slightly since the start of the federal and 2012 legislative changes.

It looks like there are no longer the 3 million people in the U.S. who are seeking therapy or counseling, she said.

To begin, the National Alliance for Mental Hypertension said, mental distress professionals are the only way to get help for depressed or anxious individuals who have mental health issues.

The group said its members receive about 1.6 million calls per year from people seeking treatment for serious issues such as anxiety or depression, and they receive approximately 1
