The only way any one individual should get out of a crisis We can’t let go of our moral code if we’re not ready, says the late economist Carl Merman of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and a number of other academic economists. Such a moral code is what led to World War II. It would be unthinkable today without the moral codes for other cultures and in some cases in our closest and fastest neighbors. And even though there were no religious codes (no law on abortion, no religious observance, no universal standards of moral behavior) for thousands of people the vast majority of whom are non-Christians the moral codes of our peoples were quite different.

A person can have a moral code that says, ‘Do this,’ Merman says. I feel like I could live with the ethical code of my time that’s the kind of ethical code that I love. Even before WWII, morality depended on what kind of person I thought and what sort of behavior my fellow-Christians would follow. In the 1940s and 1950s, a number of theologians began to realize that our current moral code was not very clear.

This ethical code came with a very low threshold, says H. M. Keating, a leading scholar of moral development in the United States and of the early postwar period who now heads the Center for Moral Education at Stanford University. Some of us developed an interest in this
