With a 1.1 BILLION budget deficit projected, Washington will be facing some tough decisions at some points this year if it continues to be plagued by an economy that’s not growing.
Here’s what’s causing the budget deficit to shrink The federal government accounts for about 18 billion in total government spending per person. The federal government makes up about 5 percent of the country’s budget. About 50 percent of it is spent by states and cities 35 percent goes to military and other programs and 30 percent goes to Social Security. The federal government is under financial strain as it faces a new budget constraint over the national debt, and is struggling to balance the books. Over the past year alone, government spending has dropped 3.7 trillion from 2013 to 2014.
There aren’t many jobs in the federal government at present. But the federal public sector is aging and having its share of budget woes. And a growing number of federal employees are out of work.
In addition to the growing problem of an underfunded federal government, there’s another factor, one that’s also a real problem for the economy. Federal workers lack basic basic needs like basic, essential health care needs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in its 2011 Labor Market Report, the federal employee population declined by 3.8 million in the first three months of this year. That drop was driven largely by an increase in unemployment for the public sector of workers. That’s the jobless rate at which full-time workers are jobless, more than 15 percentage points higher than pre-recession levels. It’s more striking to see the same disparity in employment between full-year employees and part-time employees, the same share of working-age adults in the public sector.
