AUSTINA major Austin city-based business association is warning its members against joining a pump-and-dump movement, which advocates for greater investment in public services and projects because cities make fewer decisions over what they build and how they allocate public dollars.

I can be a little bit nave when I say that we’re not very good at public services we only manage spending for ourselves, Richard B. Heflin, a senior partner at the business association, said after meeting with hundreds of workers Friday morning in downtown Austin. The members said they had asked city officials whether they would attend meetings with the Austin Community Foundation, and that city officials should consult with them on issues that had not been discussed, such as building a homeless shelter or getting help for a homeless veteran.

B.C. City Hall, the city’s main economic development agency, declined to comment. The city is working on a plan to build a new shelter next to the proposed new school construction near the city campus. The city’s got to start thinking about how it fits into that model, Heflin said.
